NEIGHBORHOOD PERFORMANCE |
An Award-Winning Theater Concept

How well do we truly know our neighbors—those whose religions, cultures, or ethnicities differ from our own? Neighborhood Performance, created and directed by Adelheid Roosen, invites audiences to step into the intimate, unseen worlds of others. Through deeply personal, unscripted stories derived from autobiographical experiences, visitors are immersed in homes, streets, and communities often overlooked. Over the course of this four-hour journey, perceptions shift, and a profound sense of connection unfolds, revealing the shared humanity that binds us all.

At the core of the performance is Roosen’s adoption method, a process where actors live with local families for two weeks, sharing daily routines and engaging in candid conversations. This approach fosters a reflective space for both actors and community members to explore behaviors, habits, and patterns. Roosen’s directorial style is rooted in trust, creating an environment where participants feel safe to dig deep into their own stories. Her gentle, yet incisive guidance encourages everyone involved to approach their vulnerabilities with authenticity, resulting in performances that are raw, real, and profoundly human.

More than just theater, Neighborhood Performance is an invitation to connect. As audiences move through the neighborhood, guided by the local moped gang, they encounter musicians, families, and business owners, engaging in shared meals and authentic dialogue. During the neighborhood performance, the audience switches locations along the way, always stopping at a place of worship — from the Coptic Egyptian Church to a Marian chapel or the local mosque. The experience breaks down the boundaries between “us” and “them,” leaving participants with a renewed understanding of themselves and the ties that connect us all.

OUR METHOD | ‘adoption’

The Neighbourhood Performance requires intensive and immersive research and preparation. Female Economy begins by ‘mapping’ the relevant neighborhood. A research team knocks on doors, attends local religious services and community meetings, and gets to know the residents on a personal level. The research leads to the selection of families or individuals who will ‘adopt’ a professional actor and take this performer into their home. The actor lives for two full weeks with the ‘adoptive’ family, eats and sleeps in their home, joins in family activities and engages in a comprehensive exchange of ideas and experiences. They discuss their passions and fears, their religion and values, their personal life histories and family relationships. A script is developed out of these dialogues, which becomes the basis for the performances. The actor and the ‘adoption’ parent have an equal role in the performance; both tell the stories of their lives in the performance. The audience enters their homes and experiences the neighborhood through the eyes of its residents; the architecture and monuments, the local economy, history, demographics, education and religion. Roosen and her team have acquainted theatermakers and performers all over the world with the method, in cities like Amman (Jordan), New York (USA), Tehran (Iran), Mexico City (Mexico), Paramaribo (Surinam) and Tangier (Morocco).

AWARDS | national & international

For The Neighbourhood Performance Adelheid Roosen and her theater company Female Economy, have won awards and acclaim from the press in its home country, the Netherlands. The concept was selected by the World Cities Culture Forum as a ‘transformational’ project because of its power to change attitudes, increase interaction between communities and to reach new audiences. Roosen was awarded The Gilder/Coigney International Theatre Award (2017) in New York for ‘artistic excellence’ and theater performances in socially vulnerable places internationally, such as the Neighborhood Performance. In 2023 Female Economy was awarded the prestigious Dutch Cultuurfonds Prize for its contribution to Dutch culture and for serving as ‘a cultural and positive countervoice in the current polarization.’

WHAT OTHERS SAY | reviews and acknowledgements

“

“This is much more than theater. Female Economy transforms an entire neighborhood into a playground, where stories of sorrow and hope resonate, and where cultural and geographical differences are softened by a willingness to look at and listen to one another.”

Vrij Nederland (Dutch weekly)
Neighborhood Performance Slotermeer (2012)

“

“The Neighborhood Performance is truly a wonder: a warm bath of gentleness. (…) Once again, the Neighborhood Performance proves its importance as a unique social and artistic experience. Female Economy opens up the city and opens your eyes to ’the other’, ultimately creating a deep sense of connection. And that feeling lasts longer than just the duration of the performance itself.”

De Volkskrant (Dutch Newspaper)
Neighborhood Performance in an asylum seeker’s center (2018)

“

“The wealth of the stories revealed in this performance stems from the themes that were approached with courage, sincerity, and above all, a great deal of sensitivity.”

Le Matin
UrbanSafar Tangier (2024)

“

“The women from Female Economy have wrought themselves an inextricable place in the Dutch theatrical framework with great dedication and idealism, always rattling at the fringes of country, city and community.”

Jury report Dutch Theatre jury
Prosceniumprijs (2012)

“

“The women opposite me was trembling as she listened, mouth open, to my story. I also became more conscious through the performance. Familiar territory became unfamiliar as I had to step over my own barriers and inhibitions. An enormous challenge that I wouldn’t have missed for the world.”

Adoption parent Sherry | about her experience in participating in the Neighborhood Performance Bijlmer (2015)

“

“I’ve rarely been touched so deeply. Magnificent in its smallness, truthfulness, hesitancy and personality. Powerful and vulnerable at the same time. Extremely special. Enormous thanks and admiration is all that’s left, that and plenty to think about.”
